Join Jo Baring, renowned art historian and curator, for a journey into the heart of sculpture.

Totem explores creativity, memory and why we have been driven to make sculptural art since the very beginning of humanity; the human story of sculpture in all its richness and complexity.

For forty thousand years, we have been carving and moulding, shaping and chiselling, feeling our way and sensing our place in the world through sculpture. In this accessible journey into the heart of sculpture, Jo explores creativity, memory and why we have been driven to make art in this medium since the very beginning of humanity.

Along the way we encounter in a fresh light the work of twentieth century and contemporary giants such as Alberto Giacometti, Barbara Hepworth, Henry Moore, Constantin Brâncusi, Louise Bourgeois, Yayoi Kusama and Antony Gormley. Lyrical and beautifully illustrated, Totem is a celebration of art, those creating it and those it means something to. 

Jo also interviewed and wrote about Phyllida Barlow on more than one occasion, so will be able to give a special insight into the exhibition showing at neighbouring Wolterton. Jo will give an illustrated talk about her book Totem followed by an audience Q&A.

Back the Bash

To increase the local impact of the Bash, we bring 400 primary school children to the festival for a morning of their own events. All for free — with absolutely no charge to the children, their families, or their schools.

Details

  • Please bring your ticket on the day. When you arrive at Mannington Hall, you’ll enter the grounds, where you’ll be asked to show your ticket. You’ll be given a coloured wristband that will give you access to what you’ve bought.
  • All events will start promptly at the advertised time. Please get to the tent in good time. That way, you won’t be in a rush, and we’ll be able to get everyone seated comfortably.
  • All events will be suitable for people aged 12 and up, unless otherwise specified.
  • Yes, all the speakers will have books for sale! And yes, you can get your copies signed!
  • Your ticket grants you access to the grounds of Mannington (over the whole long weekend).
